Technical Specifications

Version KDVI 1.4


DVI-Rendering Complies with The DVI Driver Standard, Level 0 as specified by The TUG DVI Driver Standards Committee
This means that KDVI is able to properly display plain dvi-files. 


Virtual fonts Virtual fonts are supported, as specified in the manual for the dvips program
This means that KDVI can display texts which use PostScript fonts in addition to the fonts generated by the MetaFont programm.
Font Formats
KDVI supports TeX's native PK format, and all font formats that are supported by the FreeType2 library. That includes the Type 1 and Truetype format.
Font lookup KDVI uses the kpathsearch library for fast font lookup and on-demand font generation.


PostScript KDVI supports the following  \special commands which are explained in the manual for the dvips program
  • literal Postscript (special: ")
  • literal Headers (special: !)
  • PostScript headers (special: header=filename.ps)
  • EPS inclusion (special: PSfile=filename.ps keyword=value ...) Currently only the following keywords are supported: llx, lly, urx, ury, rwi,rhi.
This means that KDVI is able to display most DVI files which use PostScript.


Hyperlinks KDVI supports the following \special commands which are explained in the HyperTeX FAQ.
  • Hyper-References (special: html:<a href="hrefstring">)
  • Hyper-Anchors (special: html:<a name="namestring">)
  • HTML-End-Tag (special: html:</a>)
  • Hyperlinks that are contained in embedded PDF code are also recognized.
