Description:
I think the way google has introduced to organize emails in G-Mail is great. This type of approach is very helpful when there are documents which can be categorized in several ways. Therefore I have an experimental idea of using Tag and search concept to organize user documents. This kind of interface is very simple and provides an alternative to organizing files in folders. I call this experimental because I don’t think same is very much applicable to storing all the files but it can be very helpful to storing user documents.
If such a concept is implemented it will unique to KDE and new provide new approach to using desktop.
This is my full idea :
I Think Desktop environment can have a new addition to enhance its operation, it only uses elements like Windows, Icons, Menus and ever changing and innovative help systems but it lacks interacting and understanding the user.
Therefore, I propose targeting a type of user. To do so Desktop needs to provide a service which can organize information present on system and present it to the user via an interactive ‘type in a query’ system rather than ‘Click through’ process to find things.
Such an interface should be amazingly simple in looks and at the same time very efficient and powerful. I think this kind of a system may be of particular interest learners on Linux.
This kind of a system could help integrate Help system, File System explorer, Basic Command Line and trouble shooter.
Information: Here information consists of man pages, help files available, user documents index and system dumps.
Now, a module is required which can process this information and makes it usable for our ‘type in system’. This provides user with option to wide range of queries such as :
Where is my abc document ?
How can I mount c drive ?
Provide Help on pthreads.
Etc.
The way this system works makes it an ideal and natural candidate to be integrated with voice recognization and speech feed back system. This will make it move natural and highly interactive to the user.
The motivation:
One can easily feel ease of using google against yahoo or MSN because it is so simple, and does not need to show categorized information like MSN or Yahoo because user can get to what he requires faster by typing in a query. Similarly I think desktop can be simplified and made much more productive and easy to use by strengthening the back end.
This is still an Idea and I need to work out implementation details. Right now I am trying to create a mock screen shot presentation to put up on a free website server.
I have worked out this document on deadline date hence it might not be well put up.
Please give me your valuable feed back as I have started to work out details and certainly start working on this project very soon.
