Season of KDE 2006
KOffice ClipArt Browser
A Season of KDE 2006 project by Corey Latislaw
Mentored by Carsten Pfeiffer
Project Details
I intend to create an application that will integrate seamlessly with KOffice and allow users to browse clip art libraries when creating a document. Instead of manually searching for files, the applicati
on allows the user browse thumbnails of available images and simplifies the users task when desktop publishing.
This project is ideal for me because I am well versed in desktop publishing, and have used other programs with similar functionality. I believe it is important to make Linux applications more accessible
for novice users by providing an easy transition from programs like Microsoft Word. The clip art viewer will make the user's life easier and enable quicker document creation.
I will dedicate between 30 and 40 hours per week to the project and treat it as a normal internship position as this is a wonderful opportunity to gain valuable work experience in my field. During the su
mmer I will not be employed, but I will work with two university organizations in my free time. I will develop volunteer programs with Women in Computer Science and work with the Student Leadership Corps on si
milar projects. My affiliation with these organizations will not conflict with my ability to work full-time on this project; however, I will be attending a Student Leadership Corps conference from August 6-11
in Atlanta, GA.
I am comfortable working independently under a mentor, possibly on the other side of the world because I have worked in similar circumstances before. I have excelled in the many online courses I have tak
en and I work best when I am able structure my time for the project at hand. I have project management experience from a software engineering course project as well as a community service project with the loca
l elementary school. In addition, I have created and organized many community service projects with Women in Computer Science with minimal supervision from the sponsoring faculty member.
I believe working in the global software community will be invaluable experience for my career goals. I intend to join the Peace Corps after graduation and assignments that I will encounter will be loose
ly structured with minimal supervision, and this experience will help prepare me for that.
I am comfortable using many tools available in the software community to track the progress of my work. I own a scanner and web-cam and have 24-hour access to high-speed internet. These tools allow for
frequent communication and information exchange. My native language is English. I live in Tallahassee Florida and often visit Tampa, Florida.
In summary, I am an accomplished leader with a vested interest in this project. The opportunity to create a useful application to fulfill the needs of the community will be personally and professionally
rewarding.
